Haida Gwaii Travel Guide
Welcome to Haida Gwaii!
Formerly known as the Queen Charlotte Islands, Haida Gwaii—which means Islands of the People—is a breathtaking and remote archipelago off the coast of northern British Columbia. The area comprises two main islands—Graham to the north and Moresby to the south—and hundreds of islets, all of which boast exceptional natural beauty. The homeland of the Haida First Nation, Haida Gwaii provides a true escape from urban life; visitors come for unparalleled fishing, camping and adventure tourism experiences, as well as to explore historic Haida villages and to sit back, breathe deep and soak up the pristine environment. The islands' unique natural habitat nurtures some extraordinary wildlife, such as the world's largest black bear, an ancient species of sea bird and a yellow daisy not found anywhere else. Gwaii Haanas National Park Reserve and Heritage Site on Moresby Island (accessible only by boat or floatplane) and Naikoon Provincial Park on Graham Island invite adventurers to admire and explore the special land and seascapes while hiking, kayaking, boating and camping. Haida Gwaii's northernmost community of Massett is home to the Delkatla Wildlife Sanctuary, while the villages of Skidegate and Old Massett are rich in Haida culture; the Kay'llnagaay Heritage Centre and Haida Gwaii Museum each features exceptional examples of traditional arts and crafts, including totem poles and dugout canoes. Queen Charlotte is the islands' administrative centre and a great place to dine, while those travelling to Haida Gwaii by air might first set foot Sandspit.
